2009-08-16

Daniel Nascimento returned to the form that won him the 2008 MVP and Top Goalscorer awards when he struck the first two goals of a 3-0 victory for Brampton Lions over St. Catharines Wolves at Victoria Park Sunday afternoon.

The 23 year-old midfielder, who led the league with 18 goals last year, scored the opening goal at the 23rd minute mark when he beat Wolves’ goalkeeper Claudio Perri after lobbing the ball over two defenders on the way in.

Just six minutes later Nascimento made it 2-0 for Brampton, and while the goal was not quite as spectacular, it was a well-struck volley that again beat Perri after the Brampton midfielder took a different diagonal rout to goal.

Following a 2-0 lead at half-time, Brampton again pressed and missed several opportunities to go further ahead, but a goal did come at 73 minutes when midfielder Cameron Medwin found the net from 12 yards for a 3-0 Brampton lead and that score held up until the final whistle.

The win vaulted Brampton Lions into the runner-up position with a superior goal average over TFC Academy, both teams with 17 points. Brampton improve to a 5-5-2 WLT record with the win, while St. Catharines Wolves are at 3-3-6 for 15 points, both teams in the National Division.

St. Catharines Wolves return to action on Wednesday when they host unbeaten Toronto Croatia at Club Roma, an 8 p.m. kickoff.
