2009-08-24

Portugal FC midfielder Jarvin Skeete put an end to Toronto Croatia’s unbeaten streak of 12 games with a first half goal at Centennial Stadium, a surprise but deserving 1-0 victory for the visiting team in the only game played in the CSL Sunday night.

Skeete struck at the 39th minute mark when he took the ball in to pass two defenders and beat Croatia goalkeeper Marko Culjak from close range to give Portugal the 1-0 lead at half-time.

Toronto Croatia pressed for an equalizer in the second half with close calls from Tihomir Maletic and Ainsley Deer, but strong goalkeeping by Mike Silva and impressive defending by player-coach Danny Amaral who prefers a more attacking role, preserved the score through to the final whistle.

Amaral also played a big part in Portugal FC’s 2-2 tie with Toronto Croatia at Brockton Stadium on July 12 when he played a two way defending and attacking game and scored the tying goal in added time.

The win boosted Portugal FC’s bid for a playoff spot, lifting the team to 16 points with a 3-4-7 WLT record, while Toronto Croatia have already clinched a playoff berth and are now seeking a home draw from a favoured position at the top of the standings. Croatia has a 8-1-4 record for 28 points.
