ASTROS FAIL TO PICK-UP MUCH-NEEDED THREE POINTS IN BID TO IMPROVE PLAYOFF PROSPECTS.......tie Brampton Lions 1-1 following a 2-2 tie by Portugal FC and Italia Shooters
2009-08-29

A North York Astros’ bid to improve their chances of entering the CSL playoffs next month took a blow in a 1-1 tie with Brampton Lions Saturday night, while a few hours earlier Portugal FC also failed to improve their prospects while being held to a 2-2 tie by Italia Shooters.

The Astros were looking for all three points and almost succeeded when their first minute goal by forward Zakariae Mahrady held up until Brampton Lions scored in added time for a 1-1 tie.

Lions’ forward Alex Arbello found the net in beating North York ‘keeper Euloge Awitor at 91 minutes and the goal came following considerable pressure by Brampton during the second half when Awitor was outstanding throughout.

Brampton forward David Guzman was ordered off by referee Steve Senderovich after being shown a second yellow card midway through the second half.

North York are now looking to catch St. Catharines Wolves for a playoff spot but trail the Niagara Peninsula team by five points.

The Astros have a 3-9-2 WLT record for 11 points and four games remaining in the regular season schedule, while Brampton Lions are in a much better position to enter the playoffs with a 6-5-3 record for 21 points and they are second in the National Division.

Portugal FC needed points to improve their playoff prospects, so the 2-2 tie keeps the International Division team in a difficult position with 17 points and only three games remaining in their regular season.

Portugal took the lead against Italia Shooters at Lamport Stadium, a goal at nine minutes by defender Kevin McIntosh, but Italia Shooters tied the game 1-1 at 28 minutes when Kadian Lecky was tripped as he was about to shoot. Referee Richard Oliveira had no hesitation in ordering the kick and Lecky took the penalty to score.

Portugal’s Jaime Carvalho scored for a 2-1 lead at 74 minutes and Italia forward Geron Duport tied the game at 88 minutes for the 2-2 final score.

Portugal FC played with 10 men for the final 10 minutes after Yonnik Thompson was ordered off after receiving a second yellow card.

Portugal have a 3-4-8 record for 17 points and they are fourth in the International Division, while Italia Shooters improve to 6-6-3 record for 21 points, also in the International Division where they occupy third position.

There is one game remaining in the CSL this weekend when Toronto Croatia host London City at Centennial Stadium for an 8.15 pm kickoff.
