BRAMPTON, BRANTFORD WIN HOME OPENERS SUNDAY Sunday, May 22, 2011 Brampton City Utd and the current CSL champions Brantford Galaxy both won their home openers by narrow margins Sunday. Brampton defeated Mississauga Eagles FC by a 2-1 score in an afternoon game played at Victoria Park in Brampton, while in an evening game the Galaxy handed Windsor Stars their second defeat of the weekend, a 1-0 result at Lions Park in Brantford. The Stars were defeated 5-2 by TFC Academy Saturday. Brampton forward Jeremy Shepherd struck early for the home side when he drove a low shot past Mississauga goalkeeper Scott Cliff after just two minutes of play, the goal coming from a corner kick. A well-played even contest produced a 1-0 score at the interval, but almost immediately following the resumption of play Oswald Adu, a substitute in the first half, increased the lead to 2-0 for the home side. The Eagles fought back in the second half and at the 89th minute forward Andrew Ornoch beat Brampton goalkeeper Roy Blanche for a 2-1 score which held until the final whistle. A goal by newcomer midfielder Ferid Idrizovic at 54 minutes was enough to give the Galaxy the victory in a televised game at Lions Park. Brantford forward Ranko Golijanin drew two Windsor defenders before passing the ball to Idrizovic who found the net past Windsor ‘keeper Anthony Santilli, a drive from 20 yards. Both teams played the second half with 10 men after referee Gianni Facchini sent off defender Chris Suta of Windsor following a second caution at 30 minutes and defender Zach Tait of Brantford Galaxy was ejected for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity just before the break.
