TorontoFC.ca June 23, 2011 An outrageous strike by Toronto FC Academy goalkeeper Quillan Roberts leveled the match for Canada at the U-17 World Cup against England as the teams drew 2-2 in Group C action. The draw was Canada’s first ever point at this tournament from 14 matches. Roberts hit the ball from inside his half and it took a bounce ahead of England keeper Jordan Pickford on way to goal at the 87th minute. The astounding finish is all the more remarkable considering that the Toronto native wasn’t expected to see any action in this tournament. Canada’s first choice keeper Maxime Crepeau missed the match due to an injury sustained in the opening game versus Uruguay. Roberts filled in and helped Canada earn its historic first point. England took the lead at the 46th minute through Adam Morgan. The Liverpool forward redirected a free kick toward the Canada goal that got through traffic to give England a 1-0 lead. Canada responded four minutes later when former TFC Academy midfielder Keven Aleman sent a low, hard volley toward the England goal, creating a rebound off the hands of a sprawling Pickford. Sadi Jalali was on the spot to dispatch the rebound and make it 1-1. England went ahead again when Blair Turgott fired a rocket from distance at the 77th minute to put the three lions on top 2-1. Canada however, refused to lay down and eventually derived the draw from Roberts’ unlikely contribution. Head coach Sean Fleming was unequivocal in showing pride for his young Canadian side saying “I feel really proud of the boys … great effort, (they) never gave up.” “I felt we didn't have a lot of luck on Sunday, definitely today. We deserved the tie.” Canada lost its opening match last Sunday to Uruguay 3-0 despite having several chances to pounce. They will take on Rwanda Saturday. Top two teams from each group and the four best third place teams from the six groups will advance to the Round of 16. Uruguay beat Rwanda Wednesday 1-0 to lead Group C with six points. England is now second on four, Canada sits third with a single and Rwanda remains without a point in the tournament. Looking ahead to the Rwanda match Fleming said “we are going to enjoy this tonight but first thing tomorrow we are going to get ready. Rwanda is a very good side.” Four Toronto FC Academy players appeared for Canada in this match. Joining Roberts were defender Parker Seymour, and attackers Michael Petrasso and Sergio Camargo. Petrasso vacated the pitch at the 72nd minute and Camargo came in at the 85th.
