TORONTO CROATIA - EUR-IN AT CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS NIAGARA UNITED LOSE BUT WIN WITH EXHIBITION Weekend games in the CSL
Friday, July 01, 2011

Niagara United went down 4-1 to a generally older, more experienced Bedlington Terriers FC from England in an exhibition match at Kalar Park
in Niagara Falls June 28, while in Europe, another CSL team,Toronto Croatia, are hitting their stride with opening wins against NK Croatia Zurich
and Croatia Dinamo Ottakring (Austria) in the Croatian World Club Championship being played at Split, Croatia.

Bedlington Terriers FC, from England’s north-east coast, fielded several players with experience in the Championship Division, that country’s level
two just below the top-flight Premier League and two players having played for Newcastle United, now a member of the Premier League.

Niagara United opened the scoring at 16 minutes on a goal by Johnnyi Bahd, but the visitors replied with four goals, Paul Brayson at 32, Richard Flynn
at 52 minutes, Paddy Atkinson at 68 minutes and Brayson again at 88 minutes.

It was a physical second half and an attractive game overall - staged by the Niagara United Soccer Club as a benefit to local charities.

“The game was a huge success and it was a tremendous learning experience for our young players,” said Niagara United head coach James McGillivray.
“After the game, the Bedlington players had high praise for our boys,” he added.

Toronto Croatia are the defending champions of the Croatia World Club Championship, having won the inaugural competition in 2007 – it's staged every
four years - and they are playing against Croatian teams from Austria, Germany, Australia, the United States and France at the coastal city of Split,
on the Adriatic.

The Canadian team is well on its way to retaining the trophy following a 4-1 victory over NK Croatia Zurich (Switzerland) on June 26 and a 3-0 defeat
of Dinamo Ottakring from Austria on June 29. Toronto Croatia forward Tihomir Maletic scored two goals in as many minutes during the second half of the
win against Ottakring.

The final is scheduled for Saturday, July 2 and it’s clear that Toronto Croatia will be involved.
