SCORELESS TIE GIVES CAPITAL CITY 11 UNDEFEATED WHILE GALAXY SCORE FIVE IN 30 MINUTES TO DEFEAT ST. CATHARINES WOLVES Capital City FC stretched their unbeaten string to 11 games with a scoreless tie against York Region Shooters, while in one other game played in the CSL Sunday, seven goals were scored in the second half when Brantford Galaxy defeated St. Catharines Wolves, 5-3. A third game, Toronto Croatia vs. TFC Academy was postponed at the ground. It was an even, well-played contest between two teams bidding for the top position in the standings, but a temperature of 36 degrees at ground level may have played a part in a limp performance by both sides in front of goal at the St. Joan of Arc ground in Maple. The scoreless tie between York Region Shooters and Capital City means the Shooters trail league-leading Montreal Impact Academy by one point and the Ottawa team is one point behind York Region. Capital City FC, with 12 games played, have two games in hand over the top two. It was a contrast at Lions Park in Brantford where the Galaxy scored five goals in the last 30 minutes of play to defeat St. Catharines. St. Catharines forward Aaron Vanvelzen opened the scoring with a goal at 29 minutes, he found the net past Galaxy goalkeeper Vladimir Markotic from 15 yards for a 1-0 score at half-time. The Garden City side went ahead 2-0 at 50 minutes on a goal by Matthew Cain, but Brantford reduced the lead at the 63rd minute mark when Dalibor Mitrovic collected a clearance from his goalkeeper Markotic to score from 25 yards. Brantford forward Ranko Golijanin evened the score at 2-2 just three minutes later and at 73 minutes referee Sylviu Petrescu pointed to the penalty spot when Golijanin was tripped in the box and Rade Novkovic found the net past Wolves’ goalkeeper Claudio Perri, a 3-2 Brantford lead. Brantford’s Mitrovic scored his second goal when he picked up a rebound from an attempt by Nenad Begovic for a 4-2 score at 75 minutes. St. Catharines struck their third goal at 88 minutes by midfielder Nicks Kinsi to make it 4-3 in favour of the home side and Brantford went further ahead on a goal by Stefan Dancetovic for a 5-3 score at the final whistle. One other game scheduled for Sunday afternoon, Toronto Croatia vs. TFC Academy, was postponed and will be rescheduled.
