London City holds Serbian White Eagles to a 2-2 tie

SC Toronto continued where they left off in 2011 with good form that helped
capture the 2011 First Division title, they won 5-0 over St. Catharines Wolves
Friday night, while Mississauga Eagles FC scored a resounding 5-1 victory over
North York Astros and a new-look London City with just one player in the line-up
from last season held Serbian White Eagles to a 2-2 tie.

Following a scoreless first half at Lamport Stadium, SC Toronto midfielder
Junior Ellis opened the scoring at the 46th minute when he found the net past
St. Catharines goalkeeper Claudio Perri, forward Jarek Whiteman made it 2-0
at 72 minutes and scored again five minutes later.

The home side’s Carlos Nogueira increased the lead to 4-0 at 80 minutes and
four minutes later at the 84th minute mark SC Toronto’s Jay Chapman scored
the fifth goal for a 5-0 final.

St. Catharines Wolves played the last 24 minutes short-handed after referee
Michael Izzo showed the red card to midfielder Scott McLennan.

Mississauga Eagles FC had a decided edge at the Hershey Centre and took the
lead over North York Astros on a goal by midfielder Thomas McLean at the
16th minute mark, Matthew Macri increased the lead at 25 minutes and forward
David James struck the third for the home side, a 3-0 lead at 44 minutes.

Mississauga defender Antoine Paul increased the lead to 4-1 at 48 minutes,
the goal coming off a corner kick and Joey Mello scored from the penalty spot
to make it 5-1 at 63 minutes. The kick was awarded when John Yong of North York
was shown the red card for a ‘preventing an obvious goalscoring opportunity’
in the penalty box.

The 5-1 score held to the final whistle.

It was a new-look and much improved London City under head coach Stan Zvezdic
