Final Score:.......York 9 FC.......0......Cavalry FC........2........

Attendance was not announced but the league site eventually listed it as 1829. It was probably the
largest midweek crowd so early season fudging made this night appear in the books as their lowest.
It was a perfect night for soccer with a warm evening with the sun still out in the north west.
Attendance would have been affected by the MLS game happening downtown with Toronto FC hosting
D.C. United which means the circus of Wayne Rooney who had scored the lone goal on a 70 yard chip
against Orlando City a few nights earlier. Reporters were at a minimum and the CPL's Armen Bedakian
took the lead in asking most of the questions.

Cavalry wins the Spring season title with their win tonight and didn't need to worry what Forge FC
did later in their visit to FC Edmonton (they lost 1-0 so Cavalry would have won tonight). Cavalry had
lost their first game of the season on Saturday against Forge to keep the title in doubt for
a few more days.

I hadn't put Cavalry as being favourites to win the Spring season. I had chosen Forge because of having
eight guys coming over from Leageue 1 Ontario's Sigma FC along with their coach then York 9 FC who had
brought guys from Vaughan Azzurri and Aurora FC also from L1O. Since other teams picked up L1O guys too
I saw the Ontario teams as being the strongest. I'd heard Cavalry had brought guys from the PDL team
Calgary Foothills (eight in fact including goalie Marco Carducci who was named 2018 PDL goalie of the year).
I just jumped to the conclusion that they were like PDL Thunder Bay Chill and just had a bunch of Americans
coming up for the summer to play. A deeper read reveals that York 9 FC goalie Nathan Ingham was the back
up goalie for Foothills last season and played one game for them on June 3rd and helped them win 1-0
against Sounders FC U23s.

There is no trophy given out for this championship. Some league officials in the press room said they
were downplaying the Spring results. Cavs head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr and his players at the press
conference asked if their trophy was downstairs waiting for them as the cameras were being turned off
but were laughing about it so they must have been in on the news.

York haven't scored in their last three games. Tonight ended a four game home stand and they only won
the first game in that time with a 1-0 win from an own goal against Pacific FC. They did have a three
game shutout streak going into tonight's game but I sensed trouble as Cavalry scored their first goal
as I wondered how York would score against the league's best team.

I wondered if Cavalry would try for a record as no CPL team has scored more than three goals in any
competition this year but instead Cavalry went conservative in the second half even replacing forward
and goalscorer Dominique Malonga with defender Nathan Mavila at 55 minutes to better hold off any late
York offensive pressure. Wheeldon Jr admitted at the press conference that the defensive move was
deliberate. This made sense as it was a road game for them so they didn't need to entertain us.
Cavalry has won all their road games this season.

York brought in Roger Thompson at cornerback at halftime and forward Michael Cox at 66 minutes as both had
been injured for most of the season.

York finish the Spring season on Canada Day as the 'early game' away in Winnipeg to play Valour FC.
The schedulers shuffled these games as they were all supposed to start at the same time like the English
Premier League's final day. They were spread out to create a triple header for their OneSoccer app.
Valour is the only team York hasn't played this season.

After tonight's results (including the late game) York are listed as 'last' with 8 points. That's actually
the same as Valour FC and Pacific FC but York are listed behind them as they only have 1 win. They've only
lost three games which is only behind Cavalry and tied with Forge but it's their five ties while no other
team has more than two that knocks York down for that stat.
