Final Score:...York 9 FC.......0......Valour FC.......2.........

Attendance was not announced but various on-light sites listed it as 2438. The game had been listed
when the schedule first came out as starting at 1:00pm but was flipped months ago to 3:30pm when
CBC television was brought in as they wanted to have more games across the country. As it turns out,
the game they showed was HFX Wanderers FC (who have packed stadiums and loud crowds) and Cavalry FC
who won the Spring Season and upset MLS team Vancouver Whitecaps and held their own against MLS
side Montreal Impact in the Canadian Championship series. Today, that looked the better game
on paper although it ended 0-0.

The later start meant the game effected some fans as Toronto FC were playing downtown against Orlando
with a 7:30pm which left a do-able two hour time gap to take a subway and streetcar ride to get to
the game on time. It did have an attendance effect most noticeably in the Generation IX supporters
section as there's an overlap of fans and many of them just didn't come out for the CPL game.

I wasn't expecting York to lose. I had watched them play HFX Wanderers and finally open up with
a 6-2 win and believed they'd found their scoring touch. Valour had injury problems and suspensions
that only left them with four outfield players on the bench and none of them defenders. Valour
scored on a bad deflection early in the game and held on effectively. York dominated possession
2-1 (had to check the stats for that but it was true). However once Gattas had his Penalty kick
and rebound stopped I changed my mind as I felt it wasn't their day.

Valour had Raphael Ohin and Jordan Murrell listed as suspended. Murrell made headlines after being
Red carded for pushing a referee and then kicking a table on his way back to the change rooms.
He was initially given a three game suspension for the referee bump but it is expected to be more
once the Canadian Soccer Association reviews the incident. Murrell has given up his captaincy
to fellow defender Skylar Thomas but Thomas was not listed on today's roster through injury.
Today's captain was midfielder Louis Beland-Goyette. I remember both Murrell and Thomas playing
in the Toronto FC Academy and Thomas continued on at Toronto FC II at the USL level.

Valour had Josip Golubar (out for the season), Tyson Farago (goalie), Ali Musse, and Dylan Sacramento
are also out as injured. York had midfielder/captain Manny Aparicio suspended for Yellow card accumulation.
Their recent signing, forward Stefan Lamanna, who started their last game a day after the signing
announcement wasn't on the bench and I found out later it was because he was injured.

Valour goalie Mathias Janssens made some brilliant saves besides the Penalty kick to earn the shutout.
York missing that opportunity and later chances in the game gave me flashbacks to early in the
Spring Season when York had scoring problems. Just one game after scoring six had me selectively
forget those problems!

York had a 14 day gap since their last game and were fresh after recovering but a brutal schedule.
A game in between on August 2nd had been postponed in Hamilton because Forge FC had played their
the night before in CONCACAF action against Deportivo Antigua FC of Guatemala. Valour had played
Monday night in Halifax.

York was playing Ryan Telfer up front as a center forward rather than a winger so he was involved
in play but still got to kick half the cornerkicks.

York coach Jimmy Brennan answered me after the game that he had no problem with goalie Nathan Ingham
coming upfield so early near the end of the game to get in the Valour box for the cornerkicks when
the visitor's box was under siege. He said there's no difference whether they lose by one of two goals.

This game was the second of a CPL tripleheader today with the timezone differences making it possible
to play them all on the OneSoccer channel. We had heard that Cavalry FC had been held to a 0-0 tie
against HFX Wanderers so this was a chance for York to vault into first place with a win knowing
Forge FC had the weekend off. The third game had FC Edmonton finish the day with a win to take a share
of first place although Cavalry has a game in hand.

The result drops York's record to 3 wins, 3 losses, 0 ties for 9 points. After today's games they
drop to fourth place.

Valour with the win improve their record to 1 win, 2 losses, and 3 ties for 6 points. That moves them
out of seventh (last place) to sixth ahead of Pacific FC who just happens to be York's next opponent
next Saturday August 17th here at York Lions Stadium at 3:30pm. They've now had a positive result
in three of their last four games.

York had beaten Valour 3-1 in Winnipeg on the July 1st--the final weekend of the Spring Season. This
helped York finish out of the basement. That result had them pass Valour in the standings and because
of other results that final day, Valour ended up as the bottom team. There's still half of the longer
Fall Season remaining.

[Late notes from August 17th: I talked to today's fourth official David Barrie before
today's game. Last week he was the referee. It was Jason Olinsky who was a referee's
assistant last week as Sean Hornsby had received a concussion in second half added time
the week earlier while officiating a game in Ottawa in USL for the Fury. The OneSoccer
broadcast and site didn't notice the change but our game sheets had been amended.
By the Wednesday there was still some doubt so the switch was made. I saw the changed
listings but was still confused because they are both bald guys! Get well soon Sean!]
