Canada Soccer announces 2020 Canadian Championship update 16 June 2020 With plans for the return of men’s professional soccer in North America safely underway, Canada Soccer has announced that the 2020 edition of the Canadian Championship will feature its 11 professional clubs from both the Canadian Premier League (CPL) and Major League Soccer (MLS). In working with both League1 Ontario and the PLSQ, Canada Soccer confirmed that the 2020 spots won by Toronto Master’s FA and AS Blainville will be moved into the 2021 edition of the Canadian Championship. As such, the revised format for the 2020 Canadian Championship will feature professional Canadian teams from both the MLS and CPL. The 2020 Canadian Championship was initially scheduled to kick off on 16 June, but in March Canada Soccer and leagues around the world suspended all sanctioned soccer as a precaution against COVID-19. Major League Soccer has recently announced their return plans for their MLS is Back Tournament (starting 8 July). Canada Soccer remains committed to ensuring that health and safety is the top priority to everyone involved in the game. The Canadian Championship is Canada Soccer’s highest domestic professional soccer competition. Dubbed the Battle of the North, the Championship was introduced in 2008 and has since been contested by 14 different teams from across the country.
