starts run along right end line. Brooks follows him and tries to poke the ball away but
by then Phillips is inside the box and he's tripped up. Referee Brian Butler awards Masters
a Penalty kick.

Attendance was about 110 on this mild evening but so much cooler than the last week that the smart 
fans wore windbreakers with the breeze and the temperature falling after dark.  There were no ball kids
and there was a danger that the game would run out of balls before the game ended.  

Referee Brian Butler gave out quite a few cards and mainly to Masters.  Just before second half 
injury time, Masters head coach Rick Titus yelled out something like “That's seven Yellows 
to our guys!” to which Butler gave Titus a Yellow card.  

The shutout was earned by Spiridon Koskinas who had a quiet evening except for two point blank saves 
at 67 minutes on a defensive blunder.  Defender Marc Jankovic had just entered the game one minute 
earlier but the referee ordered him off after he bluffed that he was wearing shin pads but he wasn't.  
The team looked frantically for a pair for him to wear but while he was out of action, Darby exploited 
his empty spot for a shot and rebound up the middle from the edge of the box with the goalie sprawling 
twice at the 15 yard line.  

Coach Titus must love the 7 substitutions rule this season (in 5 breaks in the action).  The way 
he brought guys on was impressive.  After the lone goal it was Masters who had all the chances the rest 
of the game with them more likely to increase their lead than give up the tying goal.  There's been 
other games too where the substitutions are as equally skilled as the starters. 

Offering my congratulations to manager Hubert 'Junior' Groves after the game he said that they may have 
Akeem Priestley in their lineup for next weeks' game.  Wow this former Jamaican international scored 
three goals in the L1O Final against FC London back in 2019.  I have seen him at the season opener 
in the crowd.  Groves said it's just the paperwork they've got to get through.  

Masters FA record improves to 2 wins, 0 ties, 1 loss and was a good recovery and confidence booster from 
last Saturday's loss.  I have been able to see Masters three games this season and the next one will 
be their biggest—Saturday August 21 against York United FC of the CPL in the qualifying round of the 
Canadian Championship.  

Darby played well defensively except that one play but their record falls to 0 wins, 1 tie, 2 losses.  
Their home field is the Whitby Soccer Centre Dome and should be my Friday night default destination every 
time rain is predicted.  Tonight's good weather brings the number of games I've seen in the rain 
to under 50%.
