Matchweek 11 Recap: Entertaining tilts, Credit River Cup awarded
By Marty Thompson, 10/11/21, 4:45PM EDT

Masters & 1812 entertain, Sigma claims Credit River Cup

In the Men's east division, Vaughan Azzurri maintained their perfect season on a 4-1 win over Darby FC
via goals from Dujon Martins, Thomas Bielanski, Ryan Robinson, and Orlendis Carlos Benitez Hernandez.
Vaughan’s stellar defence was on display again as Patrice Gheisar’s team stands at just six goals
against – less than half the second-best L1O team in the category.

As you likely already saw, the matchweek kicked off with an absolute thriller at the Ontario Soccer
Centre with 1812 Barrie and Masters FA playing out a 4-4 shootout. Markell Saddler’s hat trick led
the Barrie side to a 4-1 lead… Only for that to evaporate after a Masters three-goal second half
that included a ‘keeper red card. Barrie completed a two-match week with a 3-1 to Unionville Milliken
and are set to face Masters again this Saturday. Elsewhere in the east, Woodbridge Strikers downed
North Toronto Nitros 3-0.

The most notable result in the west division this weekend came Friday night when Scrosoppi FC
upset FC London 2-1 following a bizarre injury-time sequence. Scrosoppi, down a man and up a goal,
received a second red card two minutes into added time. London equalized in the 98th minute only
to have their GTA opponents score the winner in the 100th. The defeat was Mike Marcoccia’s third
on the season as the Londoners slipped out of the top two in the west with the result.

Meantime, Guelph United remained top of the west with a solid 4-2 win over bottom Windsor TFC.
Denilson Clamp and Jimmy Yancy scored their first goals for the club as the club’s seasonal
attacking onslaught continued.

Blue Devils FC is right behind Guelph after extending their undefeated streak to five matches
in a 3-0 win over ProStars Brampton.

Elsewhere in the west, Sigma FC continued its late-season rebound on a 4-1 win over
North Mississauga SC Thursday on goals from Jason Squeo, Noah Mehta, and Abdul Edusei
– with North Miss. throwing in an own goal for good measure. The win ensured Sigma
the Credit River Cup, the Sauga City Collective's trophy awarded to the top team from the city.
Sigma won the first leg 2-1.

L1O’s men’s matchweek kicks off Tuesday when perennial contenders Sigma take on new boys
Guelph United for the first time (8:30pm ET in Guelph). That Sigma team will complete
a pseudo-Southwestern Ontario trip when they face FC London on Friday.

Wednesday will see Unionville Milliken take on Vaughan Azzurri while Saturday brings a three-match
slate: Scrosoppi FC vs. ProStars, 1812 vs. Masters, and Vaughan Azzurri vs. North Toronto.
Sunday will see Guelph host Blue Devils and Darby FC take on Woodbridge.
