Final Score:...Cavalry FC.....2....York United FC......1.....

Broadcaster OneSoccer awarded 'Man of the Match' to Jose Excalante who had a goal and an assist.

This was the first game of the season for both teams and the last game of the opening weekend at this
tourney held in Winnipeg to start the season. When I saw the result of the game earlier today when
'hometown' Valour FC beat defending CPL champions Forge FC 2-0. I then expected that York which like
Forge was not allowed by the Ontario Government to train in groups into two weeks ago, would lose 4-0.
There is no comparison with training in groups for two months and training two weeks. Also York had
never beaten Cavalry in 6 games earning only one tie and that was when Cavalry were down to nine men.
This was the only game of the weekend where both teams scored so it was exciting for both team's
supporters.

The result was a surprise to me. The game was closer than I thought with York playing better in the
second half when I was advised they would tire because of their lack of training but they had a late
chance through a Calvary injury time misplay that almost had the game end in a tie.

The Cavalry second goal was a blooper that York was a victim of last year such as having the goalie
chipped from near the center line. A defender clearing the ball off a charging forward deflecting
back into your own net would make the blooper reels now tiring of continuously showing the Haitian
own goal with the goalie whiffing twice on a clearance against Canada in World Cup Qualifying.
In women's soccer, Canada's Nichelle Prince blocked the England goalie's slow clearance deflecting
it back into the net from 2 yards back in a friendly in April. (Wow all three goals shown by the
broadcaster One Soccer)!

Goal scorer Sergio Camargo only played the first half but Cavalry head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr said
after the game that it was part of the plan. With games coming twice a week for the one month of this
tournament, there will be a lot of changes in lineups between each game. The league is allowing
five substitutions per game as are other leagues have this year but there is no increase to the 18
player limit for each team's lineup. Wheeldon also named at least four players who could have
played today so they could be the deepest team here.

It was revealed before the game that York United defender Ryan Lindsay did not travel with the team
last week and is dealing with a medical complaint. It is expected he will join up with the team
at the earliest opportunity. Defender Roger Thompson was named as the new captain of York. He
replaces their only previous captain Manny Aparicio who has joined Pacific FC in the offseason.
Pacific FC is York's next opponent on Thursday afternoon at 5:00pm EST.

Aparicio was York's freekick specialist but he was matched today by Diyaeddine Abzi's world class
strike.

I was surprized that Michael Petrasso was in the backline as a defender. He played in the off
season on-loan on English side Barnet scoring 10 goals in 31 appearance and was named Player
of the Year by the club's supporters. York was rated by experts as struggling to find goal scorers
so I didn't expect him to be so far away from the front line.

It is expected that York may get reinforcements as the season goes on. Forward Nicholas Hamilton
was loaned out to Dundee FC in Scotland but had to quarantine in Winnipeg so he only met his teammates
yesterday let alone train with them.

It was Nathan Ingham's 28th birthday today and I'm sure he's had happier ones.

I finally got a complete list of the 12 new players on the 22 man squad.
Goalie: Niko Giantsopoulos
Defenders: Chrisnovic N'sa, Felix N'sa (they are brothers), Dominick Zator, Terique Mohammed
Midfielders: Jordan Wilson, Cedric Toussaint, Gerard Lavergne, Noah Verhoeven, Jordan Faria
Forwards: Julian Ulbricht, Osvaldo Ramirez
There are also four South American players that are having work visa problems and may or not arrive.

It was decided by the league to call this game the 'Comeon! Match of the Week' which is a new
sponsor for league and is a betting site.

York has only nine players returning from last season but Cavalry was listed as only having
eight returnees.

York have former Cavalry goaltender Niko Giantsopoulos and defender Dominick Zator on their roster
this year while Cavalry acquired York midfielder Joseph Di Chiara.
