Broadcaster OneSoccer awarded 'Man of the Match' to Josh Heard who had a goal and took the shot that was deflected in and credited as an 'own goal'. In offseason moves York acquired Pacific Noah Verhoeven to play in the midfield and Pacific obtained York's previous captain midfielder Manny Aparicio. Aparicio was known around the league for taking deadly freekicks. Verhoeven was rumoured to be going to Europe to play on at least a loan deal but he's end up at York for at least the time being. It was Canada Day today and York head coach Jimmy Brennan's starting line up was 11 Canadians. The CPL league brass and guys like me would must be happy as that's what this league is all about. Five of today's starters also meet the U-21 minutes of 1500 for the season. In their first game last Sunday, they satisfied 290 minutes of that requirement! The young York defenders kept Pacific from having a shot on target in the first half. While an 'own goal' type of mistake is blamed on Chrisnovic N'Sa today, this one was on a deflection that looked like it was going to go in although without the deflection, goalie Nathan Ingham may have had a chance at it. Pacific dominated possession throughout the game with 67.9% in the first half, 59.8% in the second for a 63.9% overall. York outpointed Pacific five to three in earning Yellow cards. Nothing wrong with that in such a physical game but the cards could pile up as the season moves on and they might be without a few key players in the months to come. I was surprised again that York looked better the last few minutes of the game. With only two weeks team training (not individual training) imposed by the Ontario government because of their Covid regulations, I expected fitness levels to be a problem. Because of the post game press conference and write up, I couldn't catch the Forge FC (the other Ontario restricted* team) but saw they lost 2-0 on goals at 87 and 90 minutes against FC Edmonton and am expecting to read of them tiring or having mental lapses caused by the lack of group training as reasons for their losing. Forge find themselves at the bottom of the standings with an 0-2 start. They were the league champions last year. *Athletic Ottawa is an Ontario team but they avoided the Ontario quarantine rules by training at their parent club's facilities in Spain. With East vs West for the first eight games of the season and then only four more crossover games the remainder of the season, the East will play their final 3/4 of the season against mainly their own and maybe one of them can outdo their rivals and grab that fourth playoff spot. Oh well it should only be one season. Long term if like the CFL (gridiron football), where the five Western teams are so strong that the Eastern teams may have one out of four finish over .500 and attendance is a concern in eastern Canada as the teams have been bad for decades. Playoff rules were changed to let four of the Western teams qualify and only two Eastern guaranteed for the post season. The result brings York's record to 1 tie and 1 loss that's good for sixth place in the eight team league. York's next game is Sunday July 4th at 7:00pm against FC Edmonton who have a record of 1 win and 1 loss. Yesterday it was announced by the league that the game time was changing from 2:00pm because of the expected heat wave moving in from Western Canada would be at its worse over the weekend.
