Broadcaster OneSoccer awarded 'Man of the Match' to Fraser Aird for that highlight reel opening goal. This was a very even game with both teams having three shots on net and were 50-50 in time of possession. They also turned the last minutes of the game into end-to-end action with each having a chance to earn all three points. York was also assessed four Yellow cards to zero. Five cards from their previous game which was a rough one. This continues to add up and by the time the Bubble is ending, I could see them having line up problems. Let's hope they get some of those visa-waiting players on their roster to give them a variety of players from which to choose. Forward Kyle Porter is the lone former York 9 player now on the FC Edmonton lineup. Game time was moved from 2:00pm to 10:00pm on a few days notice to avoid the heat wave that hit the area this weekend. Despite that, a television camera zoomed in on a thermometer during the game to reveal it was still 30 decrees Celsius. The field includes remnants of 72000 used tires which would intensify that heat. What was a surprise was players on both teams went all out during the final minutes of the game to try and gain all three points with end over end action. Again I was surprised that York was able to keep up with what now has still been only three weeks of team training. I'll give their endless energy to the fact that they are the youngest team at the event. A glance at the standings reveal that the four Western Canadian teams hold all of the playoff spots. If that continues they will open a gap before the Bubble ends. There can be a lot of movement early in the season as Forge FC won their first game of the season earlier tonight and vaulted from eigth to a tie for fourth (That was for a few hours until FC Edmonton earned a tie and pulled one point ahead). Encouraging was that Forge scored in minutes 70, 75, and 80 which is when teams with limited training would be expected to tire. The result brings York's record to 2 ties and 1 loss that's good for seventh place in the eight team league. Too many ties was what cost York a playoff place last season. York's next game is Wednesday July 7th at 7:00pm against Valour FC who are the first place team with three wins in three games that all ended in 2-0 wins. This will be the last of the Western teams that York hasn't played yet. After that, the teams will cycle back through the same four opponents again before leaving the Bubble after July 24th. News from Manitoba reveals the provincial government will start allowing fans into the stands after Wednesday's games. I wouldn't expect any fans except those from Winnipeg so that will be a huge advantage for Valour FC. Even if there is a capacity limit, as IG Field is so huge as it is primarily a CFL football stadium all soccer fans should be able to be accommodated.
