Broadcaster OneSoccer awarded 'Man of the Match' to Dominick Zator for his winning goal. This was the first CPL game in two seasons with fans in the stands. There was a 2000 fan limit. The broadcaster estimated there were 500 to 750 people here. What fans needed for admission was to have a Manitoba vaccination card and to be fully vaxed at least 14 days ago. I'll assume that the less than capicity crowd was the decision was announced with only a few days notice and the game started at 9:00pm local time which meant it ended just after 11:00pm on a work night. York was assigned as the 'home' team for this game when the schedule came out. Valour FC had won all three of their previous games by 2-0 scores as the more prepared Western teams feast on the Eastern teams. Forge FC and York are now nearing three weeks training which can't compare with the months of preparation the west based teams have had. When Valour scored at the 4 minute mark I was thinking "Oh oh, here we go" but instead York dug in and responded with a goal at 14 minutes and looked good the rest of the night. It turned out the Valour goal was their only shot on target in a masterful display of defence from York combined with Valour's inaccurate shooting. Valour had a 'goal' called back 82 minutes when Rafael Galhardo bent in a freekick into the top left corner but Valour Andrew Jean-Baptiste was standing in front of the York player wall. There has been a new rule applied that prevents this. I hadn't hear of it but I had noticed in the last few seasons I've never see the team awarded a free kick making a player wall of their players in front of the defenders' player wall or lining up beside them to make a ten player super wall then peeling away at the last moment hopefully distracting on what becomes a screen shot. York had five Canadian starters tonight under the age of 21 and a league recap said that feat means that York has passed their 1500 minutes quota for the 28 game season in the first four games of the season! I don't see York changing their strategy as these players are so good they are considered regulars! Before tonight, York had three players play the possible 270 minutes of the season. Chrisnovic N'sa and Dominick Zator extend that streak to four full games but goalie Nathan Ingham was rested tonight. Both teams started what would be considered their back up goalies with Jonathan Sirois not getting the start for Valour. Goaltender Matt Silva and forward Austin Ricci were former York 9 FC players in previous seasons. Michael Petrasso (2019) was the loan former Valour FC player now on York United. As each team will hit four games within the next few games, they will recycle though the same teams one more time before leaving the Bubble. They continue the East vs West games to cut down on travel costs when the teams are back home. The news release when the schedule was announced said the teams would only play teams from outside their region four more times in the season so that would mean there would be two Western teams who would not be coming to play York this year, upsetting relatives and ex-pats in the GTA area. I expect this will only occur this season while in MLS (and like the NFL) it can be many years between hosting a team from outside your division/conference. York head coach Jim Brennan answered me in the Zoom press conference that now that they've played each of their Bubble opponents once, they have something to go on and know how they play so they can work out strategies for the next time they meet. York moves up to fourth place (therefore holds the last playoff spot) although not all teams have played their midweek games. Their record is 1 win, 2 ties, 1 loss for 5 points.
