Broadcaster OneSoccer awarded 'Man of the Match' to York defender Chrisnovic N'Sa for his defensive work playing central defender. He has moved over from left back to fill in on the improvised backline necessary because of the numerous injuried. Usual wide midfielder Max Ferrari came back to play left back but there were numerous times where he could be found upfield somewhat like Canadian national team player Alphonso Davies. There were few fans here because neither this game nor the later game played here between Forge FC and FC Edmonton involved hometown Valour FC. Although the game started at 6:00pm local time, it was still hot enough that water breaks were inserted into each half. Cavalry got the only shot on target of the first half in a start that had few chances near either net. Nathan Ingham was back in goal after Niko Giantsopoulos was the starter in the last two games. Ingham was given the captain's armband as defender/captain Roger Thompson is still out injured. No errors in this game. This is York's first shutout of the season. Brennan held off making any subs until 78 minutes while Wheeldon had made four by that time. His last two were in injury time when it was more likely a stalling tactic to waste some time to preserve the tie. Some on the bench were walking wounded and the players that were on the field were working well together. Chrisnovic N'Sa is the last remaining York player to have played every minute of the season so far. York improves their disciplinary record taking only one Yellow card while Cavalry earned four. The television commentator and coaches after the game were saying it was a rough game with a lot of players getting 'stuck in'. There was really only one dustup and that was at 39 minutes with referee Dujic giving a Yellow card to one member of each team for dissent. York has never beaten Cavalry but this result to me was a triumph in that their continuing depleted lineup made a 3-0 loss like their last game a concern but they held together--edge of the seat for the last ten minutes with Cavalry chances but Nathan Ingham was able to palm a ball over the bar at the end. This was the second game in a row that York has not been able to score but some of their best offensive players have been required to prop up the back line. There's always someone who has it worse and for now that is Cavalry who now have not scored in FOUR games. I'm sure they were expecting to break out tonight. Anthony Novak was their main scoring threat. He'd been acquired from CPL champions Forge FC in the off season. Maybe an omen was that his shoe exploded in the opening minutes of the game and he had to find a spare or borrowed pair to complete the game. Throughout the game he was prey to last minute sliding tackles and point blank saves as well as teammates errant passes just missing him. The result (now including the Forge FC 1-0 result over FC Edmonton) moves York into a tie with Atletico Ottawa for fifth place with 6 points although Ottawa has a game in hand. Forge's result caused them to jump Cavalry into third place. Cavalry head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr said the team has won the regular season league race both times but lost in the playoffs so they are now only concerned with not wearing themselves out and finishing in the top four and taking their chances in the playoffs. Now that the remainder of the season schedule was released on Monday, it can be seen that the teams will meet one more time this season--in Calgary on Thursday October 14th. York's next game is Sunday the 18th against Valour FC at 6:30 local time. That game was flipped from 9:30pm with Ottawa vs Edmonton game I'd expect to crowd in more fans attracted to the earlier start. There's been a lot of time changing in the Bubble-- some of it to not conflict with Canada's Gold Cup games and some to avoid the real health concerns of afternoon games playing in the local heatwave that's hung around for at least two weeks. The July 7th meeting between York and Valour (2-1 result) was their only win this season for York and still the only blemish in Valour's perfect record. Valour have the most goals with 8 (Pacific FC also has that many but have played an extra game) and the best defensive record with 2 goals against. Many fans blamed the loss on using their backup goalie breaking the winning momentum. I'll expect Valour will come in hot from the start for revenge.
