Final Score:...Valour FC.......3.......York United FC.........0.........

Broadcaster OneSoccer awarded 'Man of the Match' to two-goal scoring Valour forward Austin Ricci.
He is not the same player mentioned in the same sentence as current Canadian National team players
Dayne St Clair (goalie) and Alastair Johnson (right back or midfielder) but they all played
for League 1 Ontario powerhouse Vaughan Azzurri. Ricci played for York 9 FC (former name
for York United FC) in 2019 so it must have been nice to burn his old team.

There were fans allowed at this game to watch the hometown Valour FC which is the reason I'd suspect
that this game was flipped to an 6:30pm start local time rather than the originally 9:30pm
schedule which now was the Ottawa vs Edmonton game. Hey Monday is a work day! There were
two reasons why both games were not mid-afternoon--the unusually hot weather has been pushing
games later in the day for health reasons and today was Gold Cup match between the USA and Canada
being broadcast in the late afternoon.

I heard a mention that capacity was 2000 fans maximum because of the COVID restrictions but
I could not tell from camera angles if there were anywhere near that many people.

I got the first question in at the post game Zoom call press conference (the usual heavy hitters
I'll assume were still writing up their national team game stories) and asked coach
Jimmy Brennan if the turning point of the game was the missed Penalty kick. Yes!

York was down 1-0 at the time of the call Valour's William Akio pushed over York's Jordan Wilson
who was jumping for a cornerkick into the box just inside the 18 yard box. So unnecessary
as Wilson was leaning away from goal and it would have been difficult for him to turn it towards
goal. Osvaldo Ramirez (the only non-Canadian starter) stepped up to take the Penalty kick
and sent it low to the left and goalie Jonathan Sirois dived correctly pushing it wide of the post.

This must have been even more of a confidence booster to Valour as this goalie has not allowed
a goal in (now) six games. York had five shots on target tonight but most were from outside the box.
They only had one shot inside the box (whether on or off target) in the entire second half.

Valour's star defender/captain Andrew Jean-Baptiste had to be subbed off at 13 minutes but the
team rallied around him to form a ring around the goalie to keep the shots at a distance.
He later returned to the sidelines limping on crutches and a huge ice pack on one knee but
was still an inspiration.

This was the third game in a row that York has not been able to score but some of their best
offensive players have been required to prop up the back line. Today's starting eleven
was the same lineup as their last game. Michael Petrasso has been one of those players
but he was given the night off. Chrisnovic N'Sa got the start tonight in defence as usual
but was subbed out at 77 minutes. He was the last 'ironman' on the team with full minutes
the previous six games.

I'm disappointed in the non-Canadians on the roster. They haven't been starters
except Osvaldo Ramirez (the last two games) and usually don't appear until the
last 20 minutes. I'd suspect that Brennan doesn't have confidence in them. There'd
be a few who had even less of a pre-season than the Canadians because of visa issues
and COVID protocal getting into Canada. These are our forwards so there's most
of our scoring threats not even on the field. I'm looking at forwards Ramirez,
Alvaro Rivero, Nicholas Hamilton, and Julian Ulbricht. There's also four others
who never did arrive. The league has a contract with a scouting system company
and they sure haven't helped fill the roster with scoring threats.

One benefit has been that the young Canadian guys continue to pile up the minutes
as starters. The team has compiled 2865 minutes in the seven games with U-21 players.
The league minimum for the entire season is 1500 minutes.

York has the worst 'goals against' total with 12 and 'plus/minus' of -6.

York's final game in the Bubble is Saturday July 24th at 6:00pm local time against
FC Edmonton who earned a tie against Atletico Ottawa a few hours after this game
but climb to 7th with a record of 1 win, 2 ties, 3 losses for 5 points. They have
played one less game than York but they will make that up with a game Wednesday
night against HFX Wanderers who have the exact same record and that game will also
be their catch up game. One result or another, York will find themselves knocked
down to 7th out of 8 teams but more important, they will be able to rest and heal
with six full days until their last game after nothing but weekend, midweek,
weekend, repeat since this season began.

I'd almost say the Saturday game is a most win, as Edmonton is the only 'Western'
team in the bottom four. York the following week will come home to host Forge FC
who are the only 'Eastern' team in the top four and are the two time CPL defending
champion. The next week they are away in Halifax and the next weekend they
return home to play....Forge FC again!
