Broadcaster OneSoccer awarded 'Man of the Match' to the goal scorer Isaiah Johnston who was described as taking "half a scorpion kick" on his one touch goal. They also showed highlights of some of his shots and passes. There were fans allowed at this game but few stayed after having just watched HFX Wanderers upset their hometown Valour FC 1-0 that had ended just one hour earlier. That win meant that York had fallen into last place in the league. York vs Edmonton would be the 32nd and final game at The Bubble before teams left for their own cities and stadiums to play their home games. York started the game with 2865 playing minutes for their U-21s. The league minimum for the entire 28 game season is 1500. They also started with eleven Canadian starters again. York came out hot tonight from the opening whistle. They counted one goal in the opening 20 minute frenzy. Goalie Nathan Ingham earned the shutout for York with him keeping them in the game during the last 30 minutes. This was only the fifth start for York defender Dominick Zator who's missed a lot of time injured. It wasn't just that he was missed in defence but it allowed midfielder Max Ferrari who had to play as a cornerback, now back in his usual position and able to bomb down the wing and send in crosses into the box like the one that earned him an assist today. York hadn't scored in their last three games coming into today. The early goal relieved a lot of pressure on the team but not being able to get an insurance goal meant that it was tense during the second half when Edmonton brought in fresh subs while York made three of their changes after 85 minutes almost as a time-wasting strategy as they were hanging on at the end including running to the cornerflags and playing keep-away. FC Edmonton forward Kyle Porter was a York 9 player in prior seasons. He had a few chances in his 68 minutes. His replacement Tobias Warschewski looked more dangerous during his time on the field and almost had the tieing goal a few times. I had expected Edmonton to tire in the second half considering they had played a midweek game and York had been able to rest up since their weekend game but it was Edmonton with key substitutes inserted in the second half looked the better team. The result means that York vaults from eighth to fifth place with these three points. They become the last team to earn their second win of the season so far. Three other teams also have just two wins (all between 5th and 8th in the standings). York also has three ties and three losses. Five results in eight games and a review of games this season reveal they have a positive result (win or tie) against their four western opponents. (two positives Win and Tie against FC Edmonton) With some reshuffling within a week after the league released the remainder of the season schedule because of Forge FC having to make space to start their CONCACAF league season, York plays a home and away series with the two time defending CPL champions Forge FC. That made it even more important to get a win today to save their playoff changes. Teams have to finish in the top four to make the post season and the top four have built a three point gap over the rest of the field. Forge is the only eastern team in the top four--in fourth. It is expected the top three Western teams will take points off each other so that may let one more eastern team squeeze in with almost 3/4 of the season to be completed. Atletico Ottawa and HFX Wanderers are the other eastern teams. The league has one table but an unbalanced schedule. York plays Forge a total of six times this season.
