Atendance was announced as "1102 paid attendance" which was a bit disappointing given that it was only the second home game of the season for York. I estimated there could have been 150 Masters supporters who only had to travel from Scarborough which is actually part of the City of Toronto. Easy to see them wearing red t-shirts. Masters was wearing new all red kits with the sponsor 'CLN Group'. "The CLN Group is a collection of three distinct companies which have been serving customers for over 20 years. The three companies: CLN Finance, CLN Mortgages, and CLN Development provide consumer loans, consumer mortgages and development services respectively". Well if it means retiring the third kit of white numbers on a graduating pink shirt that can't be deciphered in the dark, I'm all for it! Man of the Match (sponsored by Toyota for the Canadian Championships) announced at the stadium was York Michael Petrasso who I counted having two assists in his 60 minutes of work taken off after the game was out of hand. York really tried a lot of short cornerkicks this game which was fairly successful and I wonder if that will be tried during league games. The game being put away by the 2/3 mark left time for York coach Jimmy Brennan to bring in some players who haven't gotten much playing time mostly because of injuries. Lowell Wright was put in at 61 minutes. Fellow forward Jodan Faria had only played 1 minute of injury time this season and that was in last week's game. Midfielder Sebastian Gutierrez had not played for the team yet after being signed but was held back for visa restrictions. Nathan Ingham earned the shutout for York with a few key saves. He was returning from an injury and should slot back as their number one goalie. I have attended Masters three games so far this season in League1 Ontario. They won the league in 2019 but had to hold on as the Canadian Championship didn't allow any division 3 teams in the competition in the 2020 pandemic restricted competition. The 2020 final between CPL Forge FC and MLS Toronto FC has still not been scheduled! Canadian Championship rules (at least for this year) allow five subs out of a seven player bench. L1O this year allows seven subs and Masters has had a game with twenty on the game day roster. Head coach Rick Titus is not afraid to make substitutions in the first half if a guy just doesn't have it on a certain day. I asked him at the post game post conference if the turning point was having York score their second goal in first half stoppage time but he answered that he could see as soon as the game started that the guys weren't good enough. I have seen games where the underdogs were outshot and outplayed but still got a break and snuck out a result. Masters came out hot at the start of the second but when they couldn't grab a goal, York settled the game down and continued their domination. I wondered if York going forward in this tourney and drawing Toronto FC would lose 5-0 but after getting home I picked up that TFC were losing in MLS play again to stay in last place in the entire league. Maybe TFC will be the big team upset like the 2019 competition when MLS Vancouver Whitecaps were ousted by CPL Cavalry FC in a two game series in the league's first season of play. York's next game is back to league play with them hosting a home game this Wednesday night against HFX Wanderers. They have a three game unbeaten streak from their previous road trip.
