Final Score:...York United FC........2.........Atletico Ottawa.....0.......

Attendance was not announced but looked very bad. I was sure this game was rescheduloed from Wednesday
(tomorrow). Now they play opposite Toronto FC who's at home to Miami tonight. I'd heard that the 'no same
day home games' promise made after the 2019 season because of the limited shared fan base. This will happen
again on Saturday when York hosts HFX at 2:00pm and TFC hosts Nashville at 7:30pm meaning there is enought
time to get between the two venues. (I'd say tight schedules caused by Covid caused some of the conflicts
this year).

Also this game was squeezed in for a 7:00pm starting time because the league broadcaster OneSoccer is showing
a game out west at 9:30pm with Edmonton hosting Pacific. Early games limit the crowds fighting to get here
through the rush hour traffic and now with school back in session makes it harder to gather families
together to get here on time.

It appears moving it from Wednesday was made to accomodate the Canadian Championship quarterfinal match
tomorrow between Forge hosting Valour.

For entertainment though this game turned out better than the MLS game where Toronto played down a man
from 37 minutes then lost 1-0 on a Penalty kick call in added time. It's hard to say if that will have
an effect with York and TFC meeting next Wednesday--making TFC frustrated as it's now a six game losing
streak or more determined as the Canadian Championship is the one trophy they have left to play for.

This was only York's third league 'home' game since the Bubble ended in Winnipeg and their first home win.
Now York have played their first of five home games in a row for the league and their only trip is next
week when they travel downtown to play their Canadian Championship quarterfinal match against Toronto FC.

The result was a small surprise because these teams had only met three times before including once in
the Bubble in Prince Edward Island last year and all had ended in ties. That had to be weighed against
the two team's forms with York earning points in eight of their last nine games including an upset
wind on the road against previous league champions Forge FC on the weekend vs Ottawa occupying the
bottom spot in the eight team league.

The cornerflags were replaced before the game with weighted ones as the originals had blown over from the
strong winds from the west. This was the foreshadowing of another night of thunder and lightning which
didn't get going until hours after the game ended but it was forecast to start earlier which may have
been another reason attendance was low.

Some confusion during added time as Atletico's Nyal Higgins was given a Yellow card for not giving
ten yards on a freekick near the Ottawa cornerflag when York were just time killing. Seemed harmless
but referee Mathieu Souare was called over by fourth official Fabrizio Stasolla to point out that Higgins
had earned a Yellow card at 68 minutes for grabbing a player so the referee turned it into a Red card.
Someone in the press box had insisted it was for Higgins giving less than ten yards twice in a row
which also looked true but if you know you're being sent off it can't get any worse so may as well
delay a quick freekick. Still the game was a lost cause by that time and now Higgins will miss at least
the next game through suspension.

This was the first goal for Sebastian Gutierrez who's had a stuggle getting into the line up with fitness,
visas, etc and is relegated as a substitute when he does play since coming from Colombia.

Roger Thompson returned to the lineup after a long injury and immediately was put in the starting lineup
and was given back his captain's armband. He played a strong 65 minutes and looked like he'd never
missed a game.

Nathan Ingham earned the shutout for York and had to be brilliant with four key saves in the last 15 minutes
to preserve the lead. Just one Atletico goal and it could have caused panic as they have dropped points
this months to HFX Wanderers and Atletico surrendering late goals.

Max Ferrari tore up the wings and was trying to keep dribbling even when knocked down with his feet
lashing out. He was able to push his way through defenders and it would sometimes take that third player
coming in late to knock the ball away from him.

I thought Diyaeddine Abzi played a more defensive role tonight with less forays upfield until the second half.

Ottawa's foreign contingent tonight were five starters and they were all from Spain which would reflect
the parent club/ownership group for the team--Atletico Madrid. York only listed three non-Canadians tonight
with forwards Alvaro Rivero and Julian Ulbricht starting and Nicholas Hamilton as one of the four substitute
forwards.

Ottawa had midfielder Chris Mannella in their lineup who played for York last season when they played their
season in PEI. He has played for Toronto FC II and Ottawa Fury both of the USL in past years so he knows
both cities well. Ryan Telfer played for York their first two seasons but he is serving a suspension
so was not in the lineup.

Looks like the go to songs this year are the Vengaboys played after every York goal and The Four Seasons
song 'December 1963 (Oh What A Night)' at the end of every game.
