September 22, 2021...Toronto FC vs York United FC vs post game press conferences (transcripts written by Rocket Robin)

Post game press conference after the Wednesday September 22, 2021 Canadian Championship Quarterfinal
between Toronto FC [MLS] and York United FC [CPL] held at BMO Field in Toronto at 7:30pm.

The press conference was held via Zoom and I was too far away from anyone's laptop to record the audio on my phone
so I had to write a transcript/summary points as best I could by eavesdropping on someone who'd left the volume on their computer.

First up was Nathan Ingham the goaltender in tonight's game for York United:

General comments?
We were in it until the Penalty kick at 80 minutes.
Thoughts on the weather conditions?
We had to make adjustments for rain and wind. It made the passes sloppy. We needed something in the second half.
Did you feel you got the better of Yeferson Soteldo? (the designated player who was shut out until he took the Penalty kick)
It wasn't a 1 on 1 battle, we would have liked to have more of the game.
Take aways?
We tried to downplay thinking about it until this week. The levels are not that far off. A lesson learned. We thought we could stay with them. We can play anyone.

Next was Jimmy Brennan the head coach of York United FC:

Thoughts of the game?
On the playout I thought we had little spells, we created a few opportunities, I'm pleased with the positives.
Did the occasion get to your guys?
We felt a bit rushed and panicked. It took awhile to get adjusted. It's a big learning curve for our guys to get used
to playing away. We were pushed on our giveaways.
What did you like?
We were still trying to get forward after that first goal. I was pleased. There were a lot of good things.
Pleased with the wet weather?
The ball was getting away from us on our first touch. We got better by adapting to it.

After a long pause it was the turn of Toronto FC:

First up was TFC head coach Javier Perez:

Thoughts of the game?
We knew we had to press early.
Comments on the miserable night?
Our quality shone through. Our defensive game was good. Everyone was engaged.
You had watched some of their game film?
I thought they'd sit back. They gave us a good game. Our quality reflects the score line.
A strong Jacob Shaffelburg?
It was good to see our younger players mature in consistant good performance with his two assists on good crosses.
How important was it to use a strong lineup?
It sends a message this game is important to us. Our players showed up and showed us how strong they were. Consistant
performances are important.

After a longer wait was Jonathan Osorio, the midfielder with the first goal:

Comments on play?
We started on the right foot. The plan was to get an early goal, hopefully before 15 minutes. We picked up after that first goal.
How big a victory was tonight and can you build from it?
It was a big game, that trophy means a lot. We've seen MLS teams struggle in this competition. Our last two games have
been good. We've won over the second place team and a controversy before that (against Miami) so it was our third big game.
How you scored?
I tried to put myself into the right space. It was a good play by Shaff who made it easy for me. That first goal to get us going was important.
Is it a big night for Canadian soccer with York using ten Canadians?
It was a great night. They gained great experience against an MLS club. They will take this game forward. The level (of CPL)
is growing every year. It's great for the growth of the game in Canada. I wished Jimmy Brennan and Paul Stalteri good luck.
The play of Shaffelburg and Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty?
It's great for them to build on and move forward. I'm very happy for them. Jahkeele is working hard and has great potential. We need
the playing time for these young players.
