Attendance was not announced but it was later listed as 3651. Was this TFC's lowest attendance ever? Probably 'Yes' although I went to a game against Dallas that was replayed the next day during working hours and think only 50 fans were there. I don't think TFC 'sold' the game soon enough. I didn't read anything on their social posts until after their league game on Saturday. Would 3651 have come to York Lions stadium? Well on a night with weather like this--No! There is no roof over the stands so no way many people would have come. The South side supporter groups looked like they were getting soaked in the driving rain were the most enthusiastic. York fans were put in Section 204 which are in the top North East corner but were at least dry for $25 a seat. I looked for better seats online and there were thousands available, some for $138 each. I doubt this was included in the TFC season ticket holders package. The rules of this tournament are that every team must start a minimum of three Canadian starters. I didn't expect that would be a problem for TFC with Canadian internationals Jonathan Osorio and Richie Laryea. From the performance of Jacob Shaffelburg over the last few games, he was a write in for starter. Very appropriate that the three of them were involved in the first goal up the left side with Laryea pushing a pass upfield for Shaffelburg and his cross over a defender set up Osorio for an open header from 8 yards that he put just under the bar. Their subs bench (only two Canadians) had Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty awarded a Penalty kick when he was tripped up in box setting up the third goal and Noble Okello rushing in on a breakaway to score the fourth goal. Good showing by their Canadians! I haven't been able to see TFC's young Canadians as their USL League One team Toronto FC II still bars spectators at BMO Training Ground except 'family and friends'. York had no problems with their requirements by starting ten Canadians which is not unusual for their league games. Tonight was a one game Quarterfinal in the Canadian Championship. The CC path was shortened this season because of the pandemic as this would have been a two game series any other year. York had hosted League1 Ontario side Masters FA and beat them 5-0 to advance from the preliminary round. TFC in previous years had gotten a bye until the semi-final so tonight was a first for them. They had never played a CPL team before and will now face another in the next round. CPL teams had previously beaten MLS Vancouver Whitecaps (by Cavalry FC in 2019 in a two game series) and this season by Pacific FC in a one game set. The 2020 edition was just a best CPL team vs best MLS team after games within their own leagues. The 2020 final still hasn't been played because of pandemic and scheduling problems although TFC was given the CONCACAF Championship spot for 2021 in return for choosing Forge FC being allowed to host the final game. York's entire salary budget for their team is less than one TAM player on TFC! Tonight's game was played in wet conditions. It had rained from 3:00AM this morning and is predicted to continue until 1:00pm tomorrow. Well at least the fans were sheltered from the rain once they were inside although the stadium policy of 'no umbrellas' ensured we were soaked rushing for the streetcar. Also tonight HFX hosted Club de Football Montreal at 5:00pm. Montreal waited late to score twice and win 3-1. Two differences were HFX got to host and Montreal used a rotated squad because of scheduling. TFC are no longer worried about qualifying for the MLS playoffs because they are too far behind so they used a full strength squad. Calvary FC hosted Pacific FC after the TFC vs York game and Pacific won 1-0 and move on to play TFC in the semi-final. Where the game will be played is still to be decided by a draw. Was 4-0 a flattering scoreline? Maybe but it seemed unlikely York would score with only 1 shot on target and 3 off target. It didn't look like York opened up to leave their defence vulnerable to the two late goals. It was good to see the TFC coach put the Canadian subs into the game as it means more to them long term than some aging outgoing imports. Jonathan Osorio was chosen as the Man of the Match. Yes he deserved it for his goal and effort. He's won the George Gross MVP for the entire tournament before, (2018). In his post game interview we could tell this game and the tournament meant a lot to him. Alex Bono earned the shutout for TFC. He didn't have much to do--only having to make one save. One good thing for York is their next league game is Sunday, not Saturday so one extra days rest whereas Valour didn't play tonight as their Canadian Championship Quarterfinal match was played last Wednesday when they were knocked out by Forge FC who last night played in the CONCACAF League. OneSoccer (the broadcaster of tonight's game) had some exciting news as they add Telus Optik TV on a special cable channel. Great for fans out in Western Canada. Now the onus is on fans across the rest of Canada to nag their cable providers to add this channel to their sports channel lineup. Even York had some news today with them announcing the signing of two players to development contracts, Muslim Umar and Andrew Romano and that the loan spell contract with Canadian Terique Mohammed has been terminated and he's back to Dundalk FC of the League of Ireland.
