Attendance was not announced but looked better than Wednesday night's game. This time of day the weather was nice although a large storm cloud moved overhead by halftime but there was no rain. The post game statistics page listed it at 1122. This game was incredibly important in the standings by its huge playoff implications. York had climbed into fourth place at the expense of the slumping Valour (who'd been first at the end of The Bubble which was held in their hometown of Winnipeg. Earlier in the week Valour had fired their long time coach Rob Gale and replaced him with Phil Dos Santos. I was expecting the 'boost' that almost all teams give a new coach in every sport for the players to impress the new guy and start their relationship on good standing. Fotmob lists an 'actual' time standings as the game progresses live. With the other three CPL games taking place yesterday, only Valour's position could change. HFX Wanderers closed to within one point but I hadn't taken into account that Valour 'winning' today would give them fourth place on goal differential. I was in for a shock at halftime. End of the game showed the turnaround that York's win was a six point turnaround as York is fourth but now six points ahead of Valour and four points ahead of HFX. They are now within two points of Forge although Forge has two games in hand. The surprise yesterday in three games played is that the three 'Eastern' teams beat the three 'Western' teams of which only Forge (of the east) may have not been expected. Interesting that Valour started Matt Silva in goal. He played for York 9 FC in 2019 but was mostly a back up. This season he has been Valour's back up. Valour played him in their first game against York in the Bubble and it was Valour's first defeat drawing scorn for the decision by their fans. Now that the team is in free fall, they are probably changing everything. I wouldn't blame Silva for either goal. Michael Petrasso was a forward for Valour FC in 2019 and had a memorable goal against York 9 with a long chip upfield and over goalie Nathan Ingham to put a game out of reach in injury time. York defender Chrisnovic N'sa was not in the lineup because of Yellow card accumulation. I started thinking the worst at halftime even though York had outshot Valour 14-6 in the first half but were behind. Two shots off the woodwork! What did York need to do? After they took the lead they were hanging on especially near the end not being able to get an insurance goal. Valour outshot York 12-6 in the second half. Nathan Ingham had to make some point blank saves or a last minute tie would have happened. York is going in the right direction as this was their sixth 'league' game without a loss. (3 wins, 3 ties) York's game on Wednesday against Forge was originally to be played in Hamilton then it was switched to York and now is put off until November because of Forge's success in the CONCACAF League. Therefore York has a full week off until hosting HFX Wanderers next Sunday afternoon at 1:00pm. HFX hosts Atletico Ottawa on Wednesday night so we'll see if they arrive tired for the next game. This game was the first to take place on the new Covid protocal rules which all the teams in the league are adopting. It didn't make much difference to me as I'm used to the ID checks. We media types just had to go through a different door where there was a counter like they have at a bank so it was easy to examine the paperwork. We have worn masks inside since the first game.
