Attendance was not announced but looked better than the last few games. There was a promotion with York University to bring in students for this game for only a $10 admission price. This is the Thanksgiving weekend and I'm sure there were a lot of students bolting for home for maybe the first time since Labour Day. There was also an announcement at halftime welcoming the youth soccer groups that were here tonight. They must have been about six named so there were a lot of team jacketed junior high schoolers and young teenagers. Aurora and International Soccer Group were two that I heard. Now this is what will bring up the numbers for attendance. The kids bring the coaches and parents/chaperones. York has been trying to do this all season but were rebuffed during the Covid pandemic but now that children can be vaccinated, there are some groups coming back. Now next home game bring in another six clubs etc. *The CPL site listed attendance as 970. A Toronto FC II (USL League One) game was rescheduled for 4:00pm today. That made a tricky exit and drive up here on some midsize roads to try to avoid as much of the rush hour as I could. That game had TFC win 1-0 with Luca Petrasso sending in a cornerkick for a headed goal. Luca is a younger brother of Michael Petrasso and play a very similar style and the same position. It will probably mean they won't ever play on the same team. York has a set of brothers with Chrisnovic N'Sa a defender not yet able to play with his younger brother Felix N'Sa, also a defender, who's been injured the entire season. Tonight was the first time this season that Max Ferrari wasn't a starter. With a compressed schedule because of the late start to the season meaning there are often two games each week, to keep the record for 21 games is quite an accomplishment. He was the York player to have this record so it was about time for him to be given a rest. Diyaeddine Abzi leads the team in total minutes played. He did come in as a substitute at 60 minutes when the team needed a fresh offensive punch after falling behind. York's usual captain Roger Thompson missed the game because of picking up a quad injury in training this week. Dominick Zator wore the captain's armband tonight. Referee Renzo Villaneuva gave out ten Yellow cards in the game including five in the seven minutes of scheduled added time as Ottawa was trying to hang on to the tie. Two of those went to Ottawa players for time wasting. York was burned again by the encroachment rule as Sebastian Gutierrez was within ten yards of a quickly taken freekick more than sixty yards away from the goal. Months ago Alvero Rivero was burned on a second Yellow when a Forge FC player did the same thing leaving York short for the last half hour of a game on August 4th although York hung on for the win. This was Villaneuva's first time ever in charge of a CPL game. This game had huge implications for the playoff race. This is two ties in a row for York. They improve their record to 7 wins, 5 losses, 10 ties for 31 points. They move two points ahead of HFX Wanderers with both playing 22 games. HFX hosts first place Pacific FC on Thanksgiving Monday so HFX can pull into fourth with a win. Atletico Ottawa's record improves to 4 wins, 13 losses, 6 ties for 18 points. That is eighth (last) in the league and time is running out with only five games to go. A win by York tonight would have eliminated Ottawa so some pundits were writing before the game. York has one win, three ties, no losses so far this season against them with one game to go--Sunday October 24th in Ottawa. This was the end of York's five game homestand. Their result has been two wins and three ties. Though it was important not to lose, they haven't been able to shake the teams just below them for the final playoff spot. If they miss the playoffs, I can now see that they'll say one more win in this stand would have been more doable than a better record in The Bubble where they came there with only one week's full training.
