Attendance was not announced but looked comparable with last weekend which was finally listed on the CPL site as 970. This wasn't great as it was supposed to be some kind of female soccer day. The game officials were all female. The music playlist on the PA was all female. There had been supposedly a push to have a bunch of female youth teams at today's game. Some people I noticed were some of the fans. Personalized jerseys reading "Abzi Dad" and "Abzi Mom" really were Diyeddine Abzi's parents from the Montreal area visiting the GTA to watch their son play. Also at halftime I looked down and was sure I saw Toronto FC and Canadian National team player Richie Laryea. (Another fan on a message board I read after the game confirmed it was him). The weather was rather chilly and there was a strong wind from the north. That was a reason I think York chose the north end so they'd have the wind at their backs in the first half. Take the weather advantage now as by the second half around here the wind may die down or change direction! I wasn't impressed by the referee at the start in letting too many fouls against York players go undisiplined but the non-calls evened out as the game wore on. Only two Yellow cards to each team although the one to Diyaeddine Abzi is important as it was his eighth Yellow for the season and will result in him missing the next two games. Jordan Wilson was the York player who got the other Yellow card. He had charged in to the FCE box to get to a loose ball that the goalie had bobbled upward but instead of chesting it in, the way he twisted caused his arm to direct it in. So not only no goal, but a Yellow card, and worse...also his eighth Yellow card of the season so he will also miss the next two games! Isaiah Johnston missed playing the midfield for York today as he was serving the first game of his two game suspension for eight Yellow cards! Noah Verhoeven was out with a quad injury which without him and Johnston made problems in the midfield. Dominick Zator wore the captain's armband this afternoon as fellow defender and usual captain Roger Thompson also has a quad injury. This is the first goal for Jordan Faria. He has still never started a game for York but this was his tenth appearance (one was a Canadian Championship game) brought in as a substitute. Max Ferrari and Tboy Fayia battled during their half together but Fayia was subbed off at halftime probably because he'd picked up a Yellow card. The result brought York into a tie with HFX Wanderers for all of two hours as their game with Cavalry started just as this game was ending. That game turned into a goalless tie which pulled HFX back to one point ahead. York used up their game in hand on Thursday night by losing to Cavalry despite playing up a man for the entire second half. York finishes their schedule with two road games--against Atletico Ottawa and Pacific FC then come home for two rescheduled games against Forge FC. The playoffs now look difficult...what a difference two weeks makes. Three ties and one loss breaks their undefeated momentum. York's record is 7 wins, 6 losses, 11 ties for 32 points. That's two more ties than any other team. This could be the reason as to why they may not qualify. Wins are what pulls teams up the standings. Look at how positions changed from earlier in the week when Canada won their CONCACAF World Cup Qualifier. FC Edmonton's record improves to 5 wins, 11 losses, 9 ties for 24 points. They are currently seventh in the eight team league. This in effect ended their playoff run. If HFX had won later in the day that would have eliminated them but now they are hanging on by one point. The math of these things is what kept Toronto FC in the playoffs at odds of less than 1% for the last month. TFC was officially eliminated last night with a loss while hosting Atlanta. At the post game press conference, FCE head coach Alan Koch said he realizes his team wouldn't make the playoffs. I think that's why he didn't have his team gamble to get the winner themselves but just waited for a counterattack opportunity. Their season I expect will be judged as a success after 2020's Island Games campaign when the team won no games and tied one in seven games for a last place season.
