Forge looked the superior team from the start. There was a time during the second half when York was pressing that I expected the score to end up at 4-1. York's previous two games were against Forge that ended in 2-1 then 3-1 so I was wondering if the pattern would continue. York got back into the game 30 minutes after giving up the first time with a chip shot over the goalie just before at halftime. They also have a record of beating Forge twice on this field this season so that got fans hopes up. Joshua Navarro scored two second half goals within 7 minutes to close the door on an upset possibility. York head coach Jimmy Brennan said after the game that the quality and depth of Forge shone through. Forge held a 22 to 6 advantage in shots tonight. The actual start of the game depended on the end of the Canadian Championship final between CF Montreal and Toronto FC. There would have been a problem if that game had remained tied after 90 minutes but Montreal got a 72 minute goal and won. OneSoccer's cutting the trophy presentation back to broadcast this game did not please Montreal fans who wanted to savour every moment. Attendance was announced near the beginning of the second half as 5123. Certainly Forge knew they'd be hosting the semi-final a few weeks ago but until two weeks ago they hadn't locked up hosting the final until they clinched first place which they did two weeks ago when they played York United in York's final game of the season beating them 3-1 and jeopardizing York's playoff chances until later that weekend when both Valour FC and HFX Wanderers tripped up in needing a win to pass York. York then had time to prepare while Forge had two more league games to finish up which they lost both by 1-0 scores. Forge were behind in games played because they had to reschedule games as they kept advancing in the CONCACAF League and Canadian Championship games. The weather started out mild (for November) and sunny in the morning before I started my drive but changed to cold, windy, and rainy by game time. It also got dark before the game ended making it a tougher drive back. I wouldn't have gone to this game except I was e-mailed an offer by the York management if I wanted access to the press box. Great I'm a pen and paper guy and knew the weather forecast days ahead of time. I wouldn't have been able to make notes except I did notice fans in the concourse between the lower level where the ticket holders were and the unsold upper deck. That would have kept the rain off my notes. My old school style caught up to me as the post game press conference was virtual and I didn't have a way of listening to it except overhearing what other reporters were watching. Eventually I heard it clearer in the post game stats I was e-mailed which came with a link. Forge gets some time to recharge as the CFL Hamilton TiCats won a spot to host a semi-final next weekend which means the lines will be painted on the field and that puts the CPL final off until the next weekend. Forge will host a CONCACAF League semi-final game this Wednesday then fly down to Honduras to play the second leg the next Wednesday so at least they get a weekend off. The continuing games may have been the reason Forge did played without forwards Emery Welshman and Molham Babouli. On Saturday Pacific FC beat Cavalry FC to earn the other finals spot. Pacific has never beaten Forge in the three years of the CPL so Forge must be considered the favourite.
