Final Score:...York United FC........0........Atletico Ottawa.....3.......

Attendance wasn't announced but the league site had it listed within a day as 1187.
That's an improvement from the 1030 for York's last home game against Pacific FC
from Friday night. I was surprised as the weather was predicted to be bad for today.
The weather app I have and the TV news, only give the expected forecast for the entire
day until about two days before when the app gives an hour by hour breakdown. We had
a light rain in the early morning and thunderstorms in the evening and the app got
that right (it cancelled the evening League1 Ontario game in nearby Woodbridge.
The casual fan may not go into as much effort and see a bad weather forecast days ahead
and not look any further.

A busload of Ottawa supporters had made the trip to Toronto to watch. Wow four hours
each way is dedication. Must have been an early wake up call. I was surprised on
the way out that the bus for the visiting players was a 'Leduc' so I asked the driver.
He's driving them all the way to Ottawa (not the airport like non-Ontario teams).
Wow this is not the NHL so the travel budget is not large. I suspect WestJet (a league
partner) is only contracted to do interprovincial travel. Eight hours in a bus!
Yesterday at a League1 Ontario game the visitors had a coach too...four hours from
Windsor! Over the years L1O would schedule the annual Windsor TFC vs Ottawa South
United Force game in neutral Vaughan to cut down on the travel (OSUF quit L1O
to join PLSQ and play Quebec teams they could almost see across the river dividing
the provinces).

Most teams visiting York have a contingient of relatives because so many players
are from Ontario.

Also in the crowd were kids from 'Mustangs'. It took quite awhile for me to see close
enough to read their crests that they were from Stouffville. I've seen larger groups
of youth players but they are made up of three or four different clubs. Good job
York organizers. Must have been easily more than 100 kids so that means parents
and siblings here too.

Referee Seyed-Mohammad Mohseni gave out only two Yellow cards (one to each team).
This is one of the few bits of positive news for York today as today alone the team
was missing defensive midfielder Jordan Wilson for two Yellows in their win against
Cavalry on Tuesday. Wow he was sent off at 49 minutes and amazing that they could
hang on to a 1-0 lead for that long. Wilson had just come back from serving missing
the Pacific game last Friday because of Yellow card accumulation. Isaiah Johnston
also missed the game today because of Yellow card accumulation but he had finished
his second round of four Yellow cards so his suspension is two games. Head coach
Martin Nash said the team was missing its 'vocal leadership' without instructions
being called out by the missing players.

Otherwise Mohseni made the two Penalty kick calls but when watched on slow motion
replay from the comfort of home hours later, it was easy to understand why the
calls were made. He also called for a water break in each half. The GTA is
undergoing a prolonged heat wave. The one scheduled in the second was hardly
noticeable as the Atletico trainer was on the field attending to injured Zakaria Bahous.

So York are down 2-0 by 34 minutes and the game is really over. This was as easy
to predict as Toronto FC would win when they had a 4-0 win at halftime. I was
thinking of that because Atletico were wearing the blue and white kits like Charlotte FC
were yesterday. It meant all the travelling supporters were out of style with their
red & white striped kits today.

Nathan Ingham earned the shutout for Ottawa. He made a few key saves and a fortunate
bounce off the outside of the post. He was the starting goalie here during
the 'York 9 FC' days.

The two teams both had 13 shots but York only had 2 on target (the CPL site is fussier
than Fotmob saying 8 were on target). York is still plagued by firing shots high
or wide or both on the same shot. York had more possession but that was probably
an Ottawa strategy with a big lead of sitting back and waiting for York to push up
then counterattack.

This was the final game of the weekend and with that the standings will hold steady
for the next few days. With the win Atletico Ottawa pulls up to first place with
a record of 8 wins, 5 ties, and 3 losses for 29 points. They have the second best
defensive record in the league only giving up 15 goals but they've played two less
games than Forge FC who have allowed 13 goals. They have now scored 19 goals which
is just over 1 per game but they are winning the close ones.

York's record falls to 3 wins, 5 ties, 9 losses for 14 points. They stay in seventh
in the standings but more important the gap to the fourth place (final playoff team)
at 26 points is now 12 points and Forge have three games in hand on York. It looks
like the playoffs are out of the question this season.

No goals scored today means they are at a league worst 10 goals for. They've only
won three league games in total and only one at home. That's not a way to attract
repeat business.

This was the ninth time York has met Atletico Ottawa in league play and the first win
for Ottawa. York has only won once with the other seven times being ties.

York's next two games are on the road; Monday August 1st at Halifax and the
Sunday after in Winnipeg. Their next home game is Sunday August 14th against
FC Edmonton. It wouldn't surprise me by current form of both teams if Edmonton
passes them in the standings sometime before that meeting. These three opponents
are all in this lower tier fifth to eighth placement.
