The league website also lists Darby Badibengi earning a Yellow card at some time in this game.

Attendance was about 140 with a good mixture of fans and parents with children. Coming through the doors tonight, I saw that a poster had been made that admission was free. I asked a team official if it was a special night and she said their admission is always free and they make up for that with their 50-50 draws. Well there you go folks, if you have a hard time finding the $10 for most grounds, you can support this team....you just have to find a way out to get to Whitby.

This was a close game with chances until the last minute that could have turned the result around because Guelph couldn't score an insurance goal.

Carter Robart earned the shutout for Guelph with a few key saves. He was assisted by a defensive line of captain Amardo Oakley, Zacahry Ellis-Hayden, and Harvey Marchant with midfielders coming back to help if necessary. Oakley prevented a few shots from Darby's forward line of Christopher Badibengi and Kashiff Collins.

Darby's goalie/captain Matt Zaikos made some huge saves to keep them in the game until the final whistle. Darby has a respectable 20 goals against in 11 games and only allowed more than two goals in a game twice--against powerhouses Blue Devils FC and Vaughan Azzurri. Their problem is after their first two games of the season (both wins), they've only scored 8 goals in their last 9 games and have been tumbling down the standings.

Referee Kevin McEleney gave out four Yellow cards (three to Darby). A surprise that so many sliding tackles were clean with key poke checks stopping runs or blocking a shot without knocking down a player.

This is the first time over the years that I didn't see play whistled down because a ball hit one of the ceiling lanterns or guide-wires in this indoor stadium.

This was the only game in the league tonight and with the result Guelph pulls into a tie for first place (one of four teams) until the other teams play this weekend. Blue Devils FC, Scrosoppi FC, and Sigma FC are also tied for first with Blue Devils and Scrosoppi playing one less game than the others.

Guelph improves to 7 wins, 1 loss, 3 ties for 24 points. The start of today they were in sixth place which is the final playoff spot. A blip in last year's schedule had them not playing the last weekend of the season and they had to watch as other teams passed them and knocked them down to seventh. I remember seeing Tomasz Skublak at the last game on the last Sunday in Burlington when ProStars FC beat Burlington SC to flip over Guelph in the standings. A rough time for Guelph which had won the league the year before and represented L1O in the Canadian Championship in 2022 where they hosted CPL HFX Wanderers.

Guelph lost some players to the 'Mike's Mercernaries' teams that have scooped up the top players to try to make the Top 12 for the Division split coming at the end of this season. I just watched Tomasz Skublak and Alexander Zis last Saturday playing for Scrosoppi and expect to see goalie Svyatik Artemenko now with Electric City in the next few weeks.

Guelph has brought in former player Colin Gander who spent 2022 with CPL HFX Wanderers and have discovered speedy forward Camilo Vasconcelos who was just minutes away from getting into a CPL game when York United FC were short players earlier this month for a game against Atletico Ottawa but only brought in one young player substitute as they were trying to hold the lead with their regulars. I confirmed with Vasconcelos after the game that he will play at the University of Vermont when their season starts. Who else played there? Oh I see an online bio of tonight's scorer Milan Beader shows that he went to that school after a few years at York University. Who knows if he put in a good word?

Guelph last week were the first team to beat last year's L1O champions Vaughan Azzurri. Who knows if this is a playoff preview in a few months?

Darby's record slips to 3 wins, 7 losses, 1 tie for 10 points. They currently hold fourteenth spot in the twenty-one team league. In the crutial division split race, they also hold fourteenth place with 28.75 weighted points when combining last year's total. The elusive twelfth place combined season point team is Burlington SC with 33.25 points and that team and all the others can pull further ahead later this weekend when it's their turn to play.

Hey Week 11 and I realized I'm closing in on running through the league. My sixteenth coach interview as I check off each team.

Here's a post game interview I had with Guelph head coach Justin Springer who fans may remember played as a defender in the CPL's first year with York 9 FC. He was a co-head coach last season but now Keith Mason (who was at tonight's game) has gone back to behind the scenes management and Springer is the solo head coach.

Interview with Justin Springer (8 minutes 24 seconds)
Your thoughts on tonight's game?
How are you getting along at your new stadium, The Centennial Bowl?
How tight is the parity in the play this season as you duel for first place?
What was it like to beat last year's champs Vaughan Azzurri last week?
Is this a playoff preview?
While some teams have left your team, you've got new players and returning players
like Colin Gander and Camilo Vasconcelos?
You must be looking forward to the Gold Cup to support Canada AND St Kitts & Nevis?
