MONTCLAIR, N.J. (August 10, 2023) - New York Red Bulls II (6-11-5, 26 pts.) fall at home in first matchup of the year against Toronto FC II (10-5-5, 40 pts.), 2-1.

New York started the match with a high level of energy and created multiple quality chances in the attacking end. Mohammed Sofo and Ronald Donkor both had one on one chances with the Toronto goalkeeper but were unable to find the opener. The match’s scoring would start in the 23rd minute off the foot of Amos Shapiro-Thompson.

In a miscommunication from the Toronto goalkeeper, Sofo managed to block a clearance that led to Rafael Mosquera getting a shot on net that would get stopped by the opposing defense. The ball eventually found Shapiro-Thompson, who sent in a shot from long range with the goalkeeper out of position to put New York in front.

Red Bulls II continued their pressure in the final third following the opening goal. More chances from Donkor and Mosquera kept Toronto on their back foot, but New York was unable to double their lead before the halftime whistle.

The second half was more of the same, with New York maintaining a majority of possession and having the best opportunities. It wasn’t until the final ten minutes of the match that Toronto began to make their push for points on the road.

In the 87th minute, Toronto defender Adam Pearlman sent in a ball over the New York defensive line to find Dékwon Barrow, who finished the ball to level the match. That wouldn’t be all for Toronto in regulation, as Myles Morgan headed home a cross sent in by Jordan Faria for the eventual match winner in the 94th minute.

New York goes on the road against Columbus Crew 2 on Sunday, August 13. Kickoff at Historic Crew Stadium is scheduled for 7:00 P.M. ET. Coverage will be on MLS Season Pass with Apple TV, the New York Red Bulls app and NewYorkRedBulls.com.
