Weekly Rewind: The curtains are raised on the regular season
As another campaign begins, there were goals galore up and down the League1 Ontario pyramid.
Sudbury satisfaction
The weekend’s action began in the Men’s Championship on Friday, with newly promoted Sudbury Cyclones starting their year with a 1-0 away victory at York United Academy. Brendon Moxam scored the only goal of the game in the 23rd minute, helping Sudbury make amends for their penalty heartbreak against York in the L1 Cup a week ago.
Unionville Milliken travelled to Windsor City and took all three points thanks to two first-half goals from Haji Shee and George Akpabio, and an injury-time strike from Dominic Parris to seal the deal.
North Mississauga also won 3-0 in their home game against Hamilton United, with Erik Selvaggi, Christian Krzyzanowski, and Thomas Kapustynski finding the net in 15 second-half minutes.
The other Friday match ended level between Whitby and The Borough; 1-1 the final score after two first-half goals.
Then in Sunday’s Men’s Championship action, Pickering hosted a 2-2 draw with Guelph United, and Master’s FA beat Waterloo United 1-0 thanks to a late winner from Michael Avila in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
Title defences begin
A statement score from Saturday was Women’s Premier champions NDC Ontario smashing North Mississauga 9-0 away from home. The rout began when Adriana Bianchin found the net in the 23rd minute, before Melisa Kekic and Nikolina Istocki bagged braces, and Teegan Melenhorst scored a hat-trick.
Elsewhere, Simcoe County Rovers won 2-1 at home against FC London. The away side went 1-0 up through Gabby Kohut, but Sydney Atwell equalized before Rylee Traicoff turned the game on its head.
Woodbridge Strikers also began the season with a win, beating local rivals Vaughan Azzurri 2-0 away from home thanks to goals from Sabrina Bisante and Samantha Murphy – two forwards with plenty of L1ON goals already in their careers.
The Women’s Premier action finished on Sunday, when North Toronto and Guelph United played out an entertaining 3-3 draw. An Olivia Brown hat-trick for the away side was not enough to win the game as Ashley Greco, Ashley Campbell, and Elise Bell ensured the match ended level.
In the Men’s Premier on Saturday, Scrosoppi also began their title defence with a win, taking all three points in a 1-0 victory at Simcoe County Rovers. It took over an hour for someone to find the net, but Omari Cotterell made it 1-0 in the 70th minute to secure a perfect start for the champions.
There was a home win for Vaughan Azzurri, who defeated the newly promoted St Catharines Roma Wolves 4-1. St Catharines went 1-0 up through Diego Rivera in first-half stoppage time, but Gabriel Boakye levelled at the start of the second half before Raouf Mohamed and Ryan Robinson’s brace sealed the points.
The other Saturday match in the top division was FC London and Alliance United’s 2-2 tie. The hosts took a 2-0 lead in the first half with goals from Nick Ferreira and Ryan Baker, but Alliance then came back through Michael Osorio and Matthew Glavanov.
There was one game on Sunday which saw Oakville start their season with a 1-0 win against Burlington.
Women’s Championship Sunday
There were four matches in the Women’s Championship on Sunday. The opening game finished 0-0 between Tecumseh United and Pickering, but the goals came later in the day.
Whitby won 3-0 at home against Hamilton United with goals from Sophia Saville, Sarah McLeod, and Alicia Tamburro.
There was also a 3-0 home win for Scrosoppi, who beat Rush Canada Academy with three second-half goals from Emily Dinatale, Natalie Moynihan, and Aalayah Lully.
Unionville Milliken also won at home by beating Oakville 2-1. The hosts took a 2-0 lead into the break through Torrie Grant-Clavijo and Ines Delhomelle. Faith Garcia did score late for Oakville but it was not enough for a comeback.
