The Mississauga Olympians have
advanced to the quarterfinals of the Canadian Professional Soccer League's
(CPSL) championship playoffs.
The Olympians earned the berth thanks to a
second-overtime period goal by forward David Di Placido giving his team a 3-2
win over the Hamilton Thunder last week at Etobicoke's Centennial Stadium.
The goal came with about three minutes remaining before a sudden-death
shootout.
The Olympians move on to meet the North York Astros Friday
(8:05 p.m.) kicking off the league's weekend Rogers Cup championship tournament
at North York's Esther Shiner Stadium.
The Thunder roared out to a 2-0
lead in the first 15 minutes of the game. The Olympians regrouped and were able
to seize momentum. They tied the game 2-2 with goals by forwards Darren Tilley
and Hayden Fitzwilliams.
If the Olympians win their match against the
Astros, they will face the Western Conference champions and cross-town rivals,
the Toronto Croatia Saturday (4:05 p.m.)
"If all of our guys play to
their potential (against the Astros) we will win that game," Gee said. "On paper
we have the better team, we just have to go out and do it."
On the other
side of the Rogers Cup's bracket, the Montreal Dynamites battle the Metro Lions
(kickoff TBA) for the right to face the CPSL's top team, the Ottawa Wizards, on
Saturday at 2:05 p.m. The championship final is on Sunday at 2:05 p.m.
